Science

Welcome to science!  Science is one of the biggest adjustments coming from elementary school to middle school.  Science encourages you to be creative and curious while helping you form answers to the question "why does this happen."  I am looking for thinking processes more than right and wrong answers during class to help make connections between various topics.

The Metric System and Scientific Thought

​August

 

We start out the year exploring how scientists think and study materials.  We will explore topics such as measurement, observations, inferences, and curiosity.  We will also practice our organization skills as we are going to create our own textbook to compliment our lab manual.  

 

 

Studying Soil Scientifically

August - September

 

Understanding soil and how it works is very important to scientists.  We will look at the uses for soil, differences around the country, problems with improper soil conservation, and the history associated with soil.

 

 

Rocks and Minerals

​September - November

 

We start out this uint with a problem being able to tell different minerals apart.  We move on to learning about the different types of rocks, their properties, and what family they belong to.

 

Plate Tectonics

November - December

 

Plate tectonics explores how the plates move on the earth and the different types of boundaries associated with them.  We also look at the different layers of the earth and how those layers and temperature differences help move the tectonic plates.

 

Cell Biology and disease

January - February

 

This unit starts with learning how to use a microscope then moves on to exploring cell biology and germ theory.  We learn how cells function in regards to membranes, photosynthesis, and cellular respiration.  We will also touch on some microbes and their classification.

 

Force and Motion

March - April

 

We take a look at some basic physics in this unit while experimenting with Newton's Laws, speed, and acceleration.
